Our church, Crossway Church, has an amazing slogan that is so simple, but so true. It’s “Jesus Changes Everything”. You’ll see this written all over our promotional materials and displays when you come in. We also give t-shirts to visitors that say Jesus Changes Everything. For a long time, I wanted my own personalized item, so I could share the message of our church while also creating something fun and unique.
One of the first adhesive vinyl projects I decided to try was the “Jesus Changes Everything” design.
Since it was fairly simple, a square, lined up text from a font I already had on my computer, and the letters were nice and thick, I was confident I’d be able to weed it and apply it easily. I decided to use white permanent adhesive vinyl, and I chose Oracal 651, which is designed for car decals, outdoor signs, and other items that will see a lot of use and that you want a permanent bond on.
My first project was a car decal for our minivan, and if I do say so myself, it came out amazing! It was super fun to make knowing it was totally unique. I used the standard glossy vinyl settings on my Silhouette Portrait, and it came out perfect, no issues even though I’d heard white vinyl could be tricky.
After that, our pastor’s wife asked if I could make some of the same design, but on some sweatshirts they were taking to Disney. Of course, I was super happy to, even though these were going to be Heat Transfer Vinyl instead.
I went with white Siser Heat Transfer Vinyl from my local supplier (who is amazing and also sells on Amazon here), and again used the standard settings for Smooth Heat Transfer Vinyl on my Portrait.
With HTV, it’s very important that you don’t forget to mirror your design, since the adhesive faces up!
I really enjoy working with heat transfer vinyl a LOT since you don’t have to worry about it being sticky when you’re weeding it. I also love that (in most cases) the carrier sheet is already attached, so all you have to do is weed it and apply it.
I use a heat press to apply my heat transfer vinyl, and [this is the one I have]. There is also a less expensive version of the same brand [here] without attachments, but I chose attachments for future projects.
Here’s me, super excited with how the sweatshirts came out with the heat transfer vinyl applied, before delivering them, and then the sweatshirts in action:
That’s not all though!
We also had a white elephant gift exchange for the First Impressions Team that my husband and I volunteer on, and I thought making a simple water bottle with our decal would be cute and popular, and it totally was!
Again, I used White, Oracal 651 Permanent Adhesive Vinyl and cut it without mirroring, and applied it to a $5 water bottle from Five Below. It worked out perfect because it was totally smooth. The water bottle was a hit at our Christmas party gift exchange and got stolen several times!
I hope this gives you some fun ideas of multiple things you can do with one design that you can create yourself!
